What is an AVIF to JPG converter?

An AVIF to JPG converter decodes an AVIF image and writes it out as JPEG, the format that every desktop application, printer driver, upload form and messaging app opens. AVIF compresses harder and is supported by current browsers, but software released before 2021 often shows a blank icon or an error instead of the picture.

This converter decodes the AVIF and re-encodes it as JPEG at quality 85 in your browser, so the file never leaves your device: no upload, no queue on a server, no account. The pixel dimensions stay exactly the same, and because JPEG has no alpha channel, any transparent area is flattened onto white.

AVIF files usually arrive from one of three places: saved from a website that serves AVIF, exported by an Android phone or a recent camera, or handed over by a designer. If double-clicking the file produces “no application can open this file”, the format is the problem and a JPG is the fix.

Need a pixel-exact copy instead? The AVIF to PNG converter is lossless and keeps transparency, at the cost of a much larger file. If the goal is a small file for a web page, use the AVIF to WebP converter. To shrink the result further, the image compressor re-compresses the JPEG without changing its format.

How to convert AVIF to JPG

  1. Drop your .avif files onto the upload area, or click it to browse. Multiple files are supported, so a whole folder converts in one run.
  2. Check the queue: each row shows the file name, its original size and the fixed output format, JPG.
  3. Conversion starts automatically after you select your images.
  4. Download an image and open it to inspect the result, including any transparent areas.
  5. Compare the reported sizes. A photo usually ends up 20–50% larger than the AVIF it came from; that is the price of a format every app reads.
  6. Download files one by one, or use Download all to save the whole batch.

Four conversions you can reproduce with the tool above. The converter always writes JPG at quality 85, so the sizes below are typical results rather than exact guarantees.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert an AVIF file to JPG?

Drop the .avif files onto the upload area above and press Convert. Each file is decoded and rewritten as a JPEG at quality 85, and you can download the results individually or all at once.

Why will my AVIF file not open?

AVIF is a newer format. Windows Photos, older Photoshop releases, print workflows and many upload forms do not read it yet, so the file looks broken even though it is fine. Converting to JPG removes the format from the equation.

Does converting AVIF to JPG lose quality?

Slightly, because JPG is lossy at the quality this tool uses. It writes at 85%, which is where photos normally look identical on screen. If you need a pixel-exact copy, convert to PNG instead — PNG is lossless, but the file will be several times larger.

What happens to transparent areas?

They are flattened to white. JPEG has no alpha channel, so a transparent logo or cut-out becomes a white background. Convert to PNG or WebP instead if the transparency has to survive.

Can I convert several AVIF files at once?

Yes. The upload area accepts multiple files and the queue converts them in a single run, so a folder of AVIF images becomes JPG in one batch. Download all saves the whole set in one click.

Is this AVIF to JPG converter free?

It is free. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many files you convert in a session.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Decoding and encoding both happen in your browser with the Canvas API, so the files never leave your device. The page also keeps working offline once it has loaded.

AVIF to JPG Tips

  • Quality is fixed at 85% — the level where photos look unchanged on screen.
  • Transparency is flattened to white, as JPG has no alpha channel.
  • Select several files at once: the queue converts a whole batch in one run.
  • Everything runs locally — the images never leave your device.
