What is rem in pixels?

rem is a relative unit: it means the font size of the html element. To turn it into pixels you multiply the rem value by that root font size. At the browser default of 16px, 1rem is 16px, 0.5rem is 8px and 1.5rem is 24px.

Because the answer changes with the root size, a rem to px conversion is only meaningful once you know what the project sets html to. This tool keeps the root size visible, shows the multiplication and gives you a table of common rem values for the size you picked.

How to convert rem to px

  1. Set the root font size, or press 16px for the browser default and 10px for the common 62.5% setup.
  2. Type the rem value you want to convert, for example 1.5.
  3. Press Convert to px. The result panel shows the pixel value, the multiplication behind it and a copy button.
  4. Check the reference table for other common rem values at the same root size.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is 1rem in pixels?

Multiply 1 by the root font size. At the default 16px root, 1rem is 16px; with a 62.5% root it is 10px.

What is 1.5rem in px?

At a 16px root, 1.5 × 16 = 24px. At a 10px root the same 1.5rem is 15px, which is why the root size matters.

How do I convert rem to px myself?

Multiply the rem value by the root font size. For a 16px root, 0.75rem is 12px and 2rem is 32px.

Why does my result differ from another tool?

Most likely a different root size. A tool that assumes 16px will disagree with a 62.5% project by a factor of 1.6, so check the root setting first.

Should a design handoff use px or rem?

Design files usually stay in px because that is what the canvas shows, while the CSS ships rem so text scales with user settings. Convert once at the boundary and keep one unit inside each system.
