Percentage Calculator

Work out percentages both ways: a percentage of a number, what percent one number is of another, the change between two values and the total behind a known part. Every answer shows the formula it came from.

What is a percentage?

A percentage is a fraction whose denominator is always 100: 25% means 25 out of 100, or 0.25 as a decimal. Because the denominator never changes, percentages make it easy to compare numbers of different sizes — 30 out of 150 and 3 out of 15 are both 20%.

Every percentage question comes down to the same three values: a part, a whole and a rate. Give any two and the third follows, which is why picking the right mode matters more than the arithmetic.

How to calculate a percentage

  1. Pick the question you are actually asking: X% of Y, what percent X is of Y, the change between two numbers, or the total behind a known part.
  2. Type the two numbers you have. The labels change with the mode, so From and To mean exactly what they say.
  3. The result updates as you type and the Calculate button confirms it; the panel shows both the number and the arithmetic behind it.
  4. Use the copy button to take the value away, or switch modes without retyping to look at the same numbers from another angle.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a percentage of a number?

Multiply the number by the percentage and divide by 100, or move the decimal point two places: 20% of 150 is 150 × 0.2 = 30.

How do I find what percent one number is of another?

Divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100: 30 of 150 is 30 ÷ 150 × 100 = 20%.

What is the percentage increase formula?

Subtract the starting value from the final value, divide by the starting value and multiply by 100: (100 − 80) ÷ 80 × 100 = +25%. The same formula returns a negative number for a decrease.

Should I divide by the old value or the new one?

The starting value, also called the base or the old value. Dividing by the new value gives a smaller answer: going from 80 to 100 is a 25% increase, not 20%.

What is the difference between percent and percentage points?

A move from 10% to 12% is a 2 percentage point rise but a 20% increase, because the change is measured against the original 10%.
