What is a JPG to PNG converter?

A JPG to PNG converter rewrites a JPEG photo as a PNG file, the lossless format that is safe to open, edit and re-save without piling up compression artifacts. It is the usual first step before retouching a photo, cutting a subject out of its background, or handing an image to a designer.

The conversion does not bring back what the JPEG already discarded. The pixels are copied exactly as they are; what changes is how they are stored from that point on. Every save after this one keeps them identical instead of degrading them a little more.

Because PNG stores pixels losslessly, the file is normally much larger than the JPG it came from. Photos commonly grow five to ten times, so a folder measured in megabytes can end up in the tens of megabytes. Transparency is not created by the conversion either: JPEG has no alpha channel, so the PNG starts fully opaque and you add transparency afterwards in an editor.

If the goal is a smaller file rather than an editable one, the image compressor is the right tool, and to go the other way, the PNG to JPG converter makes a photo small again for the web. To keep transparency while shrinking a PNG for a page, use the PNG to WebP converter.

How to convert JPG to PNG

  1. Drop your JPG or JPEG files onto the upload area, or click to browse. Both extensions are accepted, and several files can be queued at once.
  2. Check the queue: every entry shows the file name, its original size and PNG as the output format.
  3. Conversion starts automatically after you select your images.
  4. Expect a bigger file. That is what lossless means, and it is not a sign that something went wrong.
  5. Open the PNG in your editor to retouch it, remove the background or add transparency — you can now save it as often as you like without losing quality.
  6. Download the files one by one, or use Download all to save the batch in one click.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert JPG to PNG?

Drop the JPG files onto the upload area above and press Convert. Each file in the queue is decoded and rewritten as a lossless PNG, and you can download the results individually or all at once.

Does converting JPG to PNG improve the quality?

No. The information the JPEG threw away is gone, and no converter can put it back. What conversion buys you is a stable file: from this point on, editing and re-saving keeps every pixel identical instead of degrading it further.

Why is the PNG so much bigger than the JPG?

PNG stores every pixel exactly, while JPG compresses aggressively by discarding detail. Growing five to ten times larger is normal for a photo, so keep the JPG for anything that only needs to be looked at, and convert to PNG when you intend to edit.

Does the PNG keep the transparency of the original?

There is none to keep: JPEG has no alpha channel, so the PNG starts fully opaque. The advantage is that a PNG can hold an alpha channel, so once the file is converted you can cut out a subject and export a transparent version.

Can I convert several JPG files at once?

Yes. The upload area accepts multiple files and the queue converts them in a single run, so a folder of JPG images becomes PNG in one batch. Download all saves the whole set in one click.

Is this JPG to PNG converter free?

Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many files you convert.

Are my files uploaded?

No. The conversion happens in your browser, so photos, client artwork and unpublished shots never leave your device. It also keeps working offline once the page has loaded.

JPG to PNG Tips

  • PNG is lossless, so the file is usually larger than the JPG.
  • Use it when you need an alpha channel for later editing.
  • Transparent areas stay transparent.
